Bio

Juan Ruiz, MD, PhD, MBA is Chief Medical Officer and Head of Preclinical Development at Nionyx Bio. He brings extensive global leadership experience in the development of gene therapy programs, having served in senior roles at multiple biotechnology companies. Most recently, he was Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs at Forge Biologics, and previously served as Chief Medical Officer at Abeona Therapeutics developing AAV-based therapies for rare neurodegenerative diseases. Over the course of his career, Dr. Ruiz has successfully guided programs from proof-of-concept through regulatory submissions, including IND and IMPD filings, to Phase I and II clinical trials, being responsible for clinical trial design and execution.

Dr. Ruiz earned his MD with a specialty in Hepatology and his PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Navarra, where he also completed his MBA at the IESE Business School. He pursued his post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Connecticut. In his new role at Nionyx Bio, Dr. Ruiz will oversee preclinical and clinical development, medical affairs, and related functions.
